Photos of PKD affected kidneys

Tommy,
a Blue Colourpoint Persian male, was diagnosed with chronic kidney failure
as
a result of Autosomal Dominant Polycystic Kidney Disease (PKD) in October
1999.
He
died on 22 March 2000 just 2 weeks before his 7th birthday.
One
of Tommy's kidneys has been donated to PKD research.
These photographs show his two kidneys removed after death.
They were 5 times larger than normal.
These
photos are published with the kind permission of Tommy's owner,
Elaine Commander, England.

One
kidney has been cut to show the internal
state of the kidneys.

The
fluid released was inside the swollen kidney.
Tommy's
original ultrasound scan indicated that his kidneys
were peppered with cysts, like swiss cheese.

Kidney from a 10 year old Exotic Shorthair male, Blackie, affected with PKD.
This kidney had a diameter of 70 cm (27,56 inches).
These
photos are published with the kind permission of Blackie's owner,
Mona Merethe Anisdahl, Norway.

Blackie was imported to
Norway from USA.
Blackie seemed a healthy
and happy cat.
Three months before his death, he started
to show obvious signs of illness. The huge
size of his kidneys developed within four
weeks of time. PKD was a final fact.
